Eleazar says police 'census' in communities, if true, must be stopped, investigated

By JOVILAND RITA,GMA News

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar on Tuesday said the reported "census" being conducted by policemen in communities, if true, must be stopped.

Interviewed on ANC, Eleazar denied that the police are conducting a census as claimed by Senator Panfilo Lacson, who accused the PNP of using anti-insurgency funds for the activity.

“If the PNP, and I will find out, kung kami mismo ang nanghihingi ng mga 'yan [if cops were actually the ones asking for this information], it has to be stopped. It has to be investigated,” he said.

Lacson last week claimed that a police general has instructed his subordinates

to conduct a census in different barangays using the PNP's anti-insurgency funds. He said the census might be related to the 2022 elections.

Lacson said he received reports that part of the P800 million funds allotted to the PNP would be used for the census.

Eleazar said there is no such thing as a census. According to him, convenors and leaders of advocacy groups, who would like to partner with the PNP, share the information of their members to the police.

“Hindi police ang nagtatanong niyan [The police are not the ones who are asking questions],” he said, adding the civilians and convenors voluntarily give the information to authorities.

The PNP chief denied claims that a part of the budget under the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict has been used by the police.  —KBK, GMA News
