Comelec: PWDs, seniors with deactivated registration may vote in Eleksyon 2022

Persons with disabilities (PWD) and senior citizens whose voter registrations have been deactivated may vote in the 2022 national and local elections, poll commissioner Rowena Guanzon announced Wednesday.

In a tweet, Guanzon said the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc has agreed to allow the reactivation of the registration status of PWDs and senior citizens who have failed to vote in two consecutive elections.

“@COMELEC En Banc approved the reactivation of PWDs and Senior citizens voters who failed to vote in 2 consecutive elections.  Reactivation through email and oath before the [election] officer thru video. Wait for procedure details,” Guanzon said.

GMA News Online has asked the Comelec for further details, but the poll body has yet to issue a detailed statement on the matter.

Section 27 of the Republic Act 8189 or the Voter's Registration Act of 1996 stated that the Election Registration Board "shall deactivate the registration and remove the registration records" of any person "who did not vote in the two (2) successive preceding regular elections as shown by their voting records."

The poll body has suspended the voter registration in the National Capital Region and other areas that were under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) or modified ECQ.

As of June 22, the poll body said there are at least 60 million voters registered for Eleksyon 2022.

The voter registration will end on September 30, 2021. —NB, GMA News
