12,439 new COVID-19 cases lead to over 87k active tally, highest since April 24

The Philippines’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases rose to 1,700,363 on Thursday with 12,439 new infections, the second consecutive day where more than 12,000 cases were recorded.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the new infections pushed the country’s active cases to 87,663, the highest recorded since April 24.

Of this, 95.3% are mild, 1.2% are asymptomatic, 1.5% are severe, and 0.9% are in critical condition.

Two laboratories failed to submit data on time.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,583,161 after 6,090 more patients recovered from the illness.

Meanwhile, 165 new fatalities brought the death toll to 29,539.

A total of 116 duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 3 cases previously tagged as recoveries have been validated to be active cases, and 85 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data from the DOH showed that 69% of the intensive care unit beds nationwide are in use while 49% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), 68% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 52% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

Earlier, independent monitoring group OCTA Research indicated that there is a continued transmission of COVID-19 in the country amid the threat of the highly contagious Delta variant.—LDF, GMA News
