Comelec allows voter registration in MECQ areas from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Commission on Elections en banc on Wednesday approved the conduct of voter registration in areas under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) starting September 6, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez announced on Twitter.

The voter registration in MECQ areas will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The areas currently under MECQ are:

  • Luzon: Metro Manila, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Bulacan, Bataan, Cavite, Lucena City, Rizal, and Laguna;
  • Visayas: Aklan, Iloilo Province, Iloilo City, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu City, Mandaue City in Region 7
  • Mindanao: Cagayan de Oro City

Meanwhile, the Comelec en banc also allowed voter registration to be conducted inside malls.

Jimenez said more details will be released soon.

The voter registration period is until September 30, 2021.

Voter registration activities were previously suspended in areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the strictest measure, and MECQ, the transition phase between ECQ and the more relaxed community quarantine.

While it rejected calls to extend the voter registration deadline to October 31, 2021, the Comelec has extended registration hours beginning August 23.

The Comelec on Friday said the number of registered voters for the May 2022 polls has already reached 61.06 million—KG, GMA News
