Senate confers medal of excellence to Filipino medalists in 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The Senate on Wednesday adopted resolutions conferring the newly-created Philippine Senate Medal of Excellence to Filipino athletes who scored victories in the recently-concluded 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan.

The Senate awarded the medal of excellence to:

-Hidilyn Diaz who won a gold medal in the 55-kg weightlifting event

-Nesthy Petecio who won a silver medal in the women's featherweight division

-Carlo Paalam who won a silver medal in the men’s boxing flyweight division

-Eumir Marcial who won a bronze medal in the men’s middleweight division

All senators were made co-authors and co-sponsors of the Senate Resolutions 882, 875, 878, and 876.

“For the record, Mr. President, this is historic. They are the first four who will receive, for the first time in the history of the Senate, the Philippine Senate Medal of Excellence. Congratulations to them,” Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said.

Apart from the conferment of medals, the Senate also adopted four separate resolutions congratulating and commending Diaz, Marcial, Petecio, Paalam, and the 19 other athletes who are part of the Philippine delegation to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Senate also acknowledged, through separate resolutions, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee for leading the Philippine delegation in becoming the winningest Southeast Asian country in the Summer Games.—LDF, GMA News
