House confers congressional medals on Filipino medalists in Tokyo Olympics
By ANNA FELICIA BAJO,GMA NewsThe House of Representatives on Tuesday conferred congressional medals on the Filipino athletes who medalled in the recent Tokyo Olympics.
The chamber recognized the achievements of the Filipino athletes and conferred the:
- Congressional Medal of Excellence to Hidilyn Diaz for bagging gold in the women's 55-kg category at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics;193
- Congressional Medal of Distinction to Nesthy Alcayde Petecio for winning the Philippines’ first-ever Silver Medal in Women’s Boxing at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics; reso 195
- Congressional Medal of Distinction to Carlo Paalam for bringing pride and honor to the country by winning the Silver Medal in the Men’s Flyweight Boxing Event at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics; and 196
- Congressional Medal of Distinction to Eumir Marcial for capturing the Bronze Medal in the Men’s Boxing Middleweight Division at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

The Filipino athletes were also given copies of the House resolutions commending them for their contribution to Philippine sports.
In his message, Speaker Lord Allan Velasco thanked and honored all the Filipino Olympians for their hard work and excellence.
"You have shown the world what Filipinos can achieve despite facing the most difficult of circumstances. Your determination and fighting spirit have inspired countless Filipinos during these trying times," Velasco said.
"You gave us hope, you gave us something to dream about and in those shining moments of triumph, you have all made our kababayans, young and old, residing here and abroad, extremely proud to be called Filipinos."
The Congressional Medal of Distinction is given to Filipino achievers in sports, business, medicine, science, and arts and culture while the Congressional Medal of Excellence was recently institutionalized for national athletes who win the gold medal at the Olympic Games. — DVM, GMA News
