22,820 new all-time high COVID-19 cases push active tally over 166K

The Philippines on Thursday reported a new record-high 22,820 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, bringing the nationwide tally to 2,161,892, as five laboratories failed to submit data on time.

The previous highest daily infections of 22,415 were recorded on Monday.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), this brought the country’s active cases to 166,672, the highest since April 18.

Of this, 87% are mild, 8.3% are asymptomatic, 1.4% are severe, and 0.7% are in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,960,487 after 12,337 more patients recovered from the illness.

Meanwhile, 61 new fatalities brought the death toll to 34,733, the lowest since August 16.

A total of 108 duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 29 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Based on reports on September 7, the Philippines was also able to test 74,706 individuals, of which 29.4% tested positive for the illness.

As of September 9, more than 15 million individuals have been inoculated against COVID-19.—LDF, GMA News
