PNP death toll due to COVID-19 now 114

Another cop died due to COVID-19, bringing the death toll among Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel to 114 as of Wednesday.

In an update, PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said the latest fatality is a 34-year-old police corporal assigned in Western Visayas.

He said the cop had been suffering from metastatic adenocarcinoma cancer of the bone since last year. On September 13, the cop tested positive for COVID-19.

Due to lack of available quarantine facility, the cop was placed under home quarantine at his brother’s residence while being monitored by the local government

On September 19, he succumbed, according to the PNP.

"My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the police personnel," Eleazar said in a statement.

The PNP recorded 152 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections to 38,618. At least 36,260 have already recovered from the disease while 2,244 are still active cases.

For the vaccination, the PNP reported that 142,398 or 63.94% of PNP personnel are already fully vaccinated while 71,029 or 31.90% have already received their first dose of vaccine.

At least 9,264 or 4.16% of PNP personnel have yet to be vaccinated. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
