Comelec considers weeklong extension of voter registration

The Commission on Elections on Thursday said it is considering a one-week extension of the voter registration.

Instead of a one-month extension, which the Congress is pushing, Comelec Commissioner Marlon Casquejo said it is proposing to use a one-week extension after the filing of certificates of candidacy from October 1 to 8.

"Our proposal is to use a one-week extension after the filing of COC," he said during a hearing by the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Automated Election System.

Meanwhile, several lawmakers urged the Comelec to grant a two-week extension instead.

"Baka puwedeng dagdagan kahit dalawang linggo," Cavite 4th District Representative Elpidio Barzaga Jr. said.

"Ang layo ng one week na ibinibigay ng Comelec sa one month na hinihingi ng legislature," Senator Imee Marcos added.

Both chambers of Congress are seeking to extend the voter registration period until October 31. The Comelec has set the deadline on September 30.

Casquejo said Comelec will comply if the bill will be passed as a law. —LBG, GMA News
