Robredo thanks 1Sambayan for endorsement, asks public to pray with her

Vice President Leni Robredo on Thursday thanked the opposition coalition 1Sambayan for choosing her as its presidential candidate for the May 2022 elections.

“Malaking karangalan ang tiwalang ipinagkaloob sa akin ng mga miyembro ng grupong ito,” Robredo said in a statement issued shortly after the announcement.

[It is a big honor to be trusted by members of this group.]

Robredo has yet to categorically bare her plans for the next year’s elections. According to her spokesperson Ibarra Gutierrez on Wednesday, running for another term as vice president remains an option for her.

Robredo reiterated that the presidency carries a huge responsibility. She said deciding whether to run for president should not be based on ambition or the insistence of some people.

“Mulat tayo sa tungkulin natin, bilang pinuno at Pilipino, at taimtim na pagninilay at pagdarasal ang ginagawa natin,” she said.

“Sa mga susunod na araw, samahan ninyo akong magdasal pa, that our decision will be what is best for our country. Muli, maraming salamat sa inyong tiwala.”

[We are aware of our duty, being a leader and a Filipino. What we are doing is fervently praying and reflecting. In the coming days, join me in praying more so that our decision will be what is best for our country.]

1Sambayan lead convenor and retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio said at a press conference that in case Robredo declines 1Sambayan's nomination, they would reconvene to decide what to do next.

He, however, said Robredo rejecting the nomination is a “remote possibility.”

“Now that the 1Sambayan has endorsed VP Leni, we hope that she would be encouraged to finally decide and run for president,” said former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.

“We, in the Magdalo group, have been consistent in urging her to run as we believe in her capacity to save the country from the mess [President Rodrigo] Duterte has put us into. If she decides to run, the Magdalo group would fully support her to ensure her win.”

Trillanes earlier said he would run for president should Robredo fail to decide by October 8, the last day of filing of certificates of candidacy.

Human rights lawyer Chel Diokno took to social media to express his support for Robredo’s nomination.

“This is a well-deserved nomination. Walang ibang handang pamunuan tayo kundi si VP Leni. Hoping na handa ang united opposition para suportahan si VP if she decides to run!” Diokno said on Facebook.
