Año to recommend to Duterte 3-5 names for next PNP chief

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año will forward to President Rodrigo Duterte a list composed of three to five candidates for the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Interviewed on Super Radyo dzBB on Wednesday, Año said the selection of a new PNP chief was discussed on Tuesday when he was in Malacañang for the recording of the President’s weekly address on COVID-19 response.

“Perhaps, on my part, I will submit three to five names,” he said.

Año said Duterte asked for “enough time” to decide who to appoint as the successor of PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar, whose compulsory retirement is on November 13 when he reaches the age of 56.

The Cabinet official said the next PNP chief would be the last under Duterte and would serve during the conduct of the May 2022 elections.  —Joviland Rita/VBL, GMA News
