Leni surprised by caravan turnout; Isko supporters hold their own

Vice President Leni Robredo over the weekend said she was surprised at the huge turnout of the nationwide caravan held by her supporters in connection with her 2022 presidential bid.

Robredo was referring to the simultaneous nationwide caravan held on October 23 in over 30 areas, including Metro Manila, Cebu, and General Santos City.

"I have been looking at the photos sent to me. Tuwang-tuwa po akong tinitingnan 'yung mga pictures ng lahat ng sumama sa ating Caravan of Hope," Robredo said.

"Gusto ko pong magpasalamat sa lahat ng organizers, mula sa national hanggang sa barangay. Ito po ay talagang completely volunteer-driven."

(I was very glad looking at the photos of those who joined the Caravan of Hope. I want to thank all the organizers. This is really volunteer-driven.)

The caravan’s participants used cars, motorcycles, tricycles, even boats and carabaos.

"Hindi ko po inaasahan na ganito karami ang magpa-participate, at tinitingnan ko po, parang bawat lugar, iba 'yung gimmick na ginawa [I did not expect that this will draw a lot of people, and with different gimmicks at that]," Robredo said.

Robredo said the volunteers shouldered the costs of the materials for the event, including tarpaulins, ribbons, balloons, artwork, and costumes.

Meanwhile, a separate caravan for Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, another presidential aspirant in the 2022 elections, was also held over the weekend in Manila, Quezon and Caloocan cities.

Supporters dubbed the activity as Blue Wave for Moreno and his running mate, Dr. Willie Ong, who both celebrated their birthday on Sunday, October 24, the same day the caravan was held.

A statement from Moreno’s supporters said 1,000 motorcycles and 100 cars participated in the caravan organized by alumni of the Tondo National High School, Moreno’s alma mater. 

The motorcade passed by landmarks important to Moreno’s life such as the Smokey Mountain landfill, where he worked as a scavenger when he was young, and the Manila City Hall. —KBK, GMA News
