Philippines' index crime is down by 68% —PNP

Philippine National Police chief General Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar reported Saturday that the country's index crime, its barometer of peace and order, has declined by 68% since July 2016.

"Itong 64 months na ito, mula noong July 2016 until October of 2021, ang barometer ng peace and order na index crime ay bumaba ng 68% -- dati ang sinasabi ko 64% -- compared doon sa 64 months noong mga nakaraang administrasyon," Eleazar said at the Laging Handa briefing.

(This 64 months, from July 2016 to October of 2021, the crime index which is the barometer of peace and order has dropped by 68% - previously I said 64% - compared to the 64 months of the previous administrations.)

Eleazar further reported that crimes against persons declined by 65% while crimes against property declined by 70%.

"Comparison-wise nag-i-improve tayo, pero siyempre itong mga kaganapang ito ay talagang hindi pa rin katanggap-tanggap."

(Comparison-wise we are improving, but the crimes or course are still unacceptable.)

Further, the crime solution efficiency in the last five years is at 49%, or one case solved for every two crimes that happened.

It is higher than the 26% of the previous administration, or one case solved for every four crimes that happened.

"Hindi man napakagaling 'yung 49%, but still improvement na napakalaki po 'yun from 26%," Eleazar said.

(While the 49% may not be that excellent, it is still a major improvement from the 26%.)

Eleazar said he already tasked the Anti-Kidnapping Group to coordinate with the local police and the CIDG to respond to the case of six persons kidnapped by unidentified armed men in Laurel, Batangas.

Eleazar, who is to retire soon as the PNP chief, said one of his achievements is the public's increasing trust with the police.

"Para ibigay nila ang kanilang kusang-loob, whole-hearted support ay kailangan ng mataas na kumpiyansa at respeto. Yan ang nakita natin sa nakaraang buwan," he said, citing surveys.

(For them to give their voluntary, whole-hearted support requires high confidence and respect. That’s what we saw last month.) —LBG, GMA News
