Sara Duterte resigns from Hugpong

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte has resigned from Hugpong Ng Pagbabago (HNP), the regional party she founded.

"It is with profound sadness that I hereby tender my resignation from our beloved party," Sara said in her letter to HNP members.

"My support will always be with you and I will always be grateful for all the things you have taught me. Daghang Salamat!"

Sara's resignation came days after she dropped her reelection bid in the 2022 elections, fueling speculations that she is gunning for a national post.

Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, an ally of Sara's, claimed she would run for president.

Mayor Sara's spokesperson, Liloan Mayor Christina Frasco, refused to comment about Salceda's recent remarks on the presidential daughter's possible political plans.

He also said Sara would possibly run under the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) and not with the ruling PDP-Laban, which is divided into two factions.

For his part, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, president of one of the two PDP-Laban factions, has said Sara's actions, including any decision to run for a national elective office, will most certainly affect the political landscape.

PDP-Laban standard bearer Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa already expressed willingness to be substituted by Mayor Sara.

Under the Comelec's calendar for the 2022 polls, substitution for a candidate in a national or local post can be filed from the end of COC filing period until November 15, 2021.

Anthony del Rosario, HNP secretary general, said they are wishing Sara the best "in her future plans."

"While we are saddened by her resignation, we however wish her all the best in her future plans," del Rosario said in a statement Thursday.  —KBK, GMA News
