Pinoy print artists hold 'Human/Nature' exhibit in New York

Three Filipino print artists in the United States opened this week an exhibit that will run until March 30 at the Philippine Center in New York.   According to a news release of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the "Human/Nature" exhibit was put up by master Filipino print artists Fil dela Cruz, Janos de la Cruz and Gel Jamlang.   "With works celebrating and exploring the human face and character by Janos dela Cruz, intimate and minute depictions of flowers by Jamlang, and the iconic muses of Fil dela Cruz, the exhibit explored the timeless relationship between human beings and nature," the DFA said.   Janos and Jamlang are considered two of the brightest emerging artists in the Philippine art world, the DFA said.   Fil, the guest artist in the exhibit, served as president of the Print Association of the Philippines from 1990 to 2000.   The DFA said Janos' innovative and tongue-in-cheek portraits of people in his suburban Metro Manila neighborhood from the plumber, lawyer, priest, poker player, and garbage collector "all revealed an insightful and humorous artist at work."   On the other hand, Jamlang, a relative newcomer in the visual arts world, unveiled an innovative collection of floral portraits depicting what she calls "synapses of flowers" in a bold and arresting color palette.   "In this latest New York show, dela Cruz once again returned to his famous muses theme, this time moving from ethnic facial representations to a more universal female depiction," the DFA said.   Acting Head of Post Theresa de Vega opened the exhibit and welcomed the featured artists to the Philippine Center, a venue for Filipino and Filipino-American artists to share their vision with an international audience.   Those present at the opening were Filipina artist, master printmaker and Society of Philippine Artists in America (SPAA) chairperson Lenore Lim and artist Edgar Doctor. - VVP, GMA News
