Fil-Am is new Guam Cabinet member

A Filipino-American is the new head of the Guam government's Agency for Human Resources Development (AHRD), the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday.   Alfredo Antolin Jr. was among the new Cabinet members who took their oaths before Guam Governor Eddie Baza Calvo last March 28, the DFA said in a news release.   "During the ceremony, Governor Calvo emphasized that his administration does not look into one's ethnicity or political affiliation and they instead focus on the qualifications of the people they appoint to head key agencies of the government.  He also emphasized that what is important is the appointee's willingness to serve the people of Guam," the DFA said.   Antolin was nominated for the directorship on March 3 and was confirmed by the Guam Legislature on March 19.   Taking their oaths alongside Antolin were George Santos, Director of the Guam Department of Labor, and Monte Mafnas, Director of the Department of Land Management.   The DFA noted that while Calvo is a Republican, Antolin is a known Democrat who has a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Major in Politics and History from the Salve Regina University in Rhode Island.   Antolin also has an Associate of Arts Degree in Social Science, Major in Liberal Arts and Political Science.   Before his appointment as AHRD Director, he served as consultant for the office of Senator Rory Respicio and Senator Judith Guthertz, members of the 31st Guam Legislature.   He also served as Project Coordinator IV/Administrator for Special Projects at the AHRD from April 2005 to May 2006.   Philippine Consul General to Guam Bayani Mangibin joined Antolin's family and members of the Filipino Community in witnessing the swearing-in ceremony at the Governor's Complex in Adelup, Guam.   Mangibin congratulated Antolin on his appointment and expressed great pride for his achievement, and thanked Calvo for appointing a Filipino to his Cabinet.   He said this also reflects on the deep and strong ties between the people of the Philippines and Guam. - VVP, GMA News
