She becomes the first Filipino diplomat’s spouse to head the non-profit social group of women from the different Missions of the United Nations (UN) in New York.

Cabactulan, who will serve a two-year term, was elected by the UNDWC executive committee at the Indonesian Mission on June 3.

Since 1963, the club has hosted fund-raising activities and donated financial support to deserving and eligible charitable organization.

At present the club has 150 active members from different countries.

In addition, 27 lady permanent representatives to the U.N. are honorary members.

Ban Soon-taek, wife of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, is the sole patron of the club.

UNDWC is a close partner of the UN in carrying out its objective to promote, maintain and sustain world peace, security and respect of human rights.

It provides activities that enhance cooperation among members in undertaking any projects, and also gives opportunities to interact with other organizations and groups outside the UN system in New York.

It also promotes friendly relations, on an informal basis, among representative of various missions through social teas and other events and the understanding of and appreciation for the cultures and customs of the various peoples represented at the UN.

In the previous postings of her husband, Cabactulan was chairman of the Sydney Consuls General Spouses’ Group in Sydney, Australia, and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Diplomatic Ladies Association in the United Arab Emirates.

In her statement to the UNDW Executive Committee, Cabactulan said she felt honored for the privilege given her to lead the club.

She reiterated the importance of teamwork and exalted the spirit of volunteerism of the members.

Cabactulan said she is convinced that in her own little and modest way she is showcasing the sterling qualities of a Filipino and that of a good leader.

“Modestly with unquestionable integrity and probity, my educational qualifications and vast experience in life prepared and equipped me with strength and vigor to tackle the task ahead, and I am proud to be a University of the Philippines (UP) alumna,” she said.

Last year, she was the coordinator cum facilitator that organized “Women for Women” — the Asia-Pacific International Fashion and Cultural Show participated in by 47 countries.

The event raised $28,000 that was donated to the UNICEF for young victims of war and conflict. — Filipino Reporter
