'Lavender Law' conference, career fair set in San Francisco Aug. 22-24

The conference will address diverse issues related to marriage equality, transgender rights, family and relationship issues.

 

SAN FRANCISCO —Following the landmark Supreme Court decision to repeal Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and effectively eliminate Proposition 8 in California, the legal landscape for LGBT families is changing rapidly.

The National LGBT Bar Association’s 25th Anniversary Lavender Law Conference & Career Fair August 22-24 in San Francisco, California, will address the lasting impact these new regulations will have on the LGBT community, as well as many other diverse issues ranging from transgender rights to intellectual property.

 

Lavender Law is the LGBT bar’s largest event of the year, drawing 1,600 legal professionals including law firm practitioners, corporate counsel, academics, members of the judiciary and law students.

The Conference features over 40 workshops and general attendance sessions.

The theme of the 25th Anniversary Lavender Law is celebrating past victories while looking ahead to what must still be achieved. The Supreme Court’s ruling on DOMA and Proposition 8 aligns perfectly as cutting edge workshops on topics such as employment benefits, immigration law, and tax and estate planning will analyze the changing legal sphere following the decisions and how legal professionals and activists can build on this momentum for even greater successes in the coming years.

 

Two general attendance sessions will discuss ways in which federal recognition impacts the LGBT community in addition to marriage.

The session on developments in relationship recognition will discuss the progress that has been made given repeal of Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act and the challenges that still exist for marriages to be recognized across the country.

Additionally, in honor of the 25th anniversary, another general attendance session will look forward to what is still to come in the next 25 years.

Speakers will analyze topics such as equality for transgender individuals, the intersex community and the tensions between religious exemptions and the LGBT community.
