A 12-year-old student of St. Mary’s Academy in Pasay City has made his OFW father proud by getting a perfect score and winning a gold medal in a recently held Math contest in Hong Kong.

Raphael Dylan Dalida, whose father is an OFW in Croatia, was among the Filipino students who bagged medals in the 19th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC) held from July 12 to 16.

"I cried and I was really happy," Dalida said, recalling the moment he was awarded the gold medal. "It was indescribable."

Dalida said he was not expecting to get a perfect score in the contest as the questions were hard. In the individual round, contestants had to solve 15 questions in 90 minutes or just 6 minutes per question.

He said he dedicates his award "to God, my parents, MTG, my school, and everyone who supported me."

MTG is Mathematics Trainers Guild, which has been training Dalida since 2014.

Winning a silver medal is Filbert Ephraim Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig, while the bronze medalists are:

  • Evgeny Cruz of Palanan Elementary School in Makati,
  • Enzo Raphael Chan of Bayanihan Institute in Tarlac,
  • Chiara Bernadette Tan-Gatue of St Jude Catholic School in Manila,
  • Kristen Steffi Teh of Grace Christian College in Quezon City, and
  • Cassidy Kyler Tan of Davao Christian High School in Davao City

"We at MTG are proud of the kids’ performance," said Dr. Simon Chua, one of the team leaders of the Philippine delegation to the event.

Aside from the Philippines, countries and territories that took part in the contest are the United States, Australia, South Africa, Bulgaria, China, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Macau, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. —KBK, GMA News
