2 soldiers killed, 1 hurt in NPA ambush in Quezon


Two government soldiers were killed in an ambush staged by communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Quezon province on Wednesday morning, according to reports reaching the military's Southern Luzon Command (Solcom). A soldier was also hurt in the attack that occurred at 10:30 a.m. in Barangay Mamala in Sampaloc town, the report said. "The troops, who were coming from coordination with community leaders, were able to fire back and engage the [rebels] who were in a position of advantage," the report said. The report did not identify the fatalities. It said the wounded soldier was rushed to the Solcom Hospital in Lucena City for treatment. Two firearms were lost in the ambuscade, according to the report. The rebels also burned the government vehicle. The attack occurred during the inauguration of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III as the country's 15th president. - KBK, GMANews.TV
