DepEd chief pays last respects to slain Zamboanga teacher

Education Secretary Armin Luistro on Wednesday went to Zamboanga City in Mindanao to pay his respects to a teacher who died defending her students from a pardoned convict last week. The Department of Education said Luistro also paid his respects to a student who died in the same attack, and visited those who were injured. An entry on the DepEd's Twitter account said Luistro also met with local officials led by Mayor Celso Lobregat. Last Oct. 22, pardoned convict Seli Mateo stabbed dead Lorna Pulalon and her student Ces Orfiano, and Ruben Flores, a grandfather who accompanied his grandchild to school. Mateo, a native of Negros Oriental who was jailed for rape in 1981 but released in 2008, was mauled to death after irate villagers ganged up on him. Investigation showed Mateo ran amuck and took over two classrooms in an elementary school in Zamboanga City early Friday afternoon last week. Six people were hurt in the attack. - KBK, GMANews.TV
