Phivolcs: Four quakes, moderate steaming noted at Mayon Volcano

At least four volcanic quakes and moderate steaming were noted at Mayon Volcano in Albay in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said on Wednesday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) also said a fair crater glow can be seen by the naked eye Tuesday night. "The seismic network around Mayon Volcano recorded four volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Steaming activity from the crater was moderate with white steam clouds drifting towards northwest. Fair crater glow (Intensity II- can be seen by naked eye) was observed last night," it said. Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, reminding the public not to enter the six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ). It cited the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rockfalls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano. "Active stream/river channels and those perennially identified as lahar prone areas in the southern sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather conditions or when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall," Phivolcs added. In Sorsogon, Phivolcs recorded two volcanic quakes and three rockfall events from Bulusan Volcano in the last 24 hours. Steaming activity at Bulusan's thermal vents was "wispy to weak" while no steaming was observed at the summit crater. Meanwhile, Taal Volcano in Batangas remained relatively quiet, registering no volcanic quake in the last 24 hours. Alert Level 1 also remained over Bulusan and Taal. – VVP, GMA News
