Police: 4 killed, 30 hurt in Sorsogon bus accident

Four people were reported killed while 30 others were injured after two speeding buses figured in a head-on collision in Matnog, Sorsogon shortly after midnight Wednesday. Sorsogon police operations officer Superintendent Dionisio Laceda said the incident occurred at 12:30 a.m. Thursday in Pawa village in Matnog town. "Pareho nag-overtake at nag-head-on collision ito (Both buses had just overtaken other vehicles when they figured in a head-on collision)," Laceda said in an interview on dzBB radio. Citing initial reports reaching him, he said the Eagle Star bus was heading from Matnog to Manila while the other was heading in the opposite direction. As of 9 a.m. Thursday, he said four passengers were confirmed dead, while 30 — including the drivers of both buses — were injured. The police are contacting the fatalities' kin to inform them of the incident while those injured were rushed to the Irosin District Hospital, he added. Laceda said the road conditions at the time of the accident did not appear to be slippery at the time since there was no rain. "Hindi naman umuulan, nag-overtake lang (It was not raining at the time. The buses just collided after they overtook other vehicles)," he said. Matnog is a fourth-class town with a population of 32,712 people in 6,069 households. — RSJ, GMA News
