MILF suspends 3 commanders for deadly October Basilan clash

Three field commanders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front have been suspended for violating the ceasefire with government troops in the aftermath of the Oct. 18 skirmish in Basilan that led to the deaths of 19 elite Army soldiers and five rebels.  On Wednesday, MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal said in a phone interview that the three rebel commanders were suspended for three months effective Feb. 11. Iqbal said among those suspended was Dan Laksaw Asnawi, the deputy commander of the 114th Base Command. The identities of the two other MILF commanders were not immediately available.
“We suspended them for three months and they were told to undertake education, especially on the ceasefire agreement,” Iqbal said.

The suspension order was in compliance with the investigation conducted by the International Monitoring Team, Iqbal said. The IMT completed its probe last month.
The IMT is a multi-national body headed by Malaysia which oversees the implementation of the truce between government forces and the MILF.  Earlier, Armed Forces Peace Process head Col. Dickson Hermoso said that based on the IMT investigation, it was found out that both the military and the MILF committed ceasefire violations during the clash in Al-Barka town, specifically with regards to coordination between the two forces.   Even as the military acknowledged the IMT findings, Hermoso said they are no longer going to impose futher sanctions on its personnel since the officers mentioned in the IMT report have been relieved and are facing court martial proceedings.    These are:
  • Col. Alexander Macario, former commander of the Special Operations Task Force-Basilan; Lt. Col. Leo Pena, former commander of the 4th Special Forces Battalion;
  • Col. Aminkadra Undog, former Special Forces Regiment commander; and
  • Lt. Col. Orlando Edralin, former commandant of the Special Forces Regiment Training School.
