NDRRMC: 1 dead, 2 hurt as 'Crising' makes landfall

(Updated 4:53 p.m.) At least one person was reported killed while two were injured in the wake of bad weather conditions brought by Tropical Depression Crising, disaster management officials said Tuesday.

Office of Civil Defense Region 11 head Lisa Mazo said a man drowned while crossing a river in Compostela Valley at 10 a.m., radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported.

The report said Mazo initially identified the fatality as one Francisco Digaynon Jr., who tried to cross a local river in New Bataan town but was swept by the current. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said at least two people were injured after a landslide triggered by Crising destroyed their house in Lanao del Sur.
In its 3 p.m. update, the NDRRMC said the landslide occurred at Barangay Malasalug in Sapad town in Lanao del Norte, destroying one house. The NDRRMC identified the injured as Maria Nacua, 20; and Dodong Nacua, 8.  The two were brought to the Lanao del Norte Provincial Hospital in Kapatagan. Also, the NDRRMC said at least 12 domestic flights were canceled due to the bad weather. In Caraga, the NDRRMC said Barangays Siagao, Patong, San Roque, Poblacion and Baras in San Miguel town in Surigao were flooded. Also flooded was Barangay Anahao in Tago town. Crising makes landfall Crising made landfall Tuesday afternoon over the southern part of Davao del Sur, state weather forecasters said. PAGASA forecaster Samuel Duran said Crising still packed maximum sustained winds of 45 kph and is still expected to move west-northwest at 22 kph. "Kaninang 1 p.m. ito nag-landfall sa southern tip ng Davao del Sur (It made landfall on the southern tip of Davao del Sur at 1 p.m.)," Duran said in an interview on dzBB radio. As this developed, residents in at least three areas in Davao City were evacuated Tuesday afternoon as rain from Tropical Depression Crising caused rivers there to overflow. The city government cited an update from its disaster risk reduction and management office indicating Upper and Lower Sangilangan and Waan River are overflowing as of 1:50 p.m. "River flooding update: The following areas are presently experiencing overflowing: Sangilangan (Upper & Lower) and Waan River. Residents already evacuated," it said on its Facebook and Twitter accounts. It did not immediately indicate how many residents were evacuated from their homes due to the overflowing rivers. Earlier, the city government said the Davao River was at warning level, with residents on standby for evacuation. Lasang River was also on warning level, it added. Davao City suspended classes for the day up to the high school level, in anticipation of heavy rain from Crising. — KBK/RSJ, GMA News
