Enough electricity for election day in Mindanao - Palace

Malacañang on Saturday reassured residents in Mindanao the government is working to make sure there is enough electricity for Election Day, May 13. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte also said the Palace will ask the Department of Energy to keep residents in Mindanao updated on the power situation in their areas. “[Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla] has assured citizens in that area the DOE will be working with energy stakeholders to assure adequate power for the actual Election Day,” she said on government-run dzRB radio. Blackouts or power outages are worrying, especially on an election day as they have been used for cover in which to cheat in an election. And with blackouts reportedly lasting as long as seven hours in areas like General Santos City, there would be a prime opportunity for elections to be subverted. However, Valte made it clear that the DOE was aware of the situation. “We’ll ask the DOE to come up with a particular statement to inform the public anong nangyayari in that particular area,” she said. — DVM, GMA News
