Cavite placed under state of calamity

Following torrential rains and flooding in several areas, Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla on Monday said the province has been placed under a state of calamity.

“At 9:30 in the morning, we decided to place Cavite in a state of calamity due to extreme floods and rains,” Remulla told GMA News Online in a phone interview.

Remulla said many families have been displaced by the floods, but the provincial chief executive was unable to give an exact number due to developing conditions in the province.

“The floods are between 8-12 feet high, with many families displaced,” he said.

Meanwhile, Remulla said rescue operations will have to wait, as the heavy downpour will make any efforts dangerous for the rescuers.

“Papunta ng dagat [yung agos ng dagat,] we have to wait for the rain to [stop] before we look for the missing,]” he said.

As of 4 p.m., Remulla said they have confirmed one dead and two missing in the province.

Remulla said a certain Dome Gamban, 34, was confirmed dead after two houses were swept when an irrigation dam breached around 8 a.m.

Gamban's neighbor, Johnny Gonzales, 15, remains missing, he said. The identity of the second person missing was not immediately available.

Remulla also announced that classes in all levels in the provice will continue to be suspended Tuesday, August 20. — Patricia Denise Chiu/RSJ, GMA News
