Some towns in Eastern Samar remain isolated

Days after Super Typhoon Yolanda devastated parts of the Visayas, some towns in Eastern Samar remain isolated, a television report said Monday.

 

According to a report of GMA News' Katrina Son on Unang Balita, roads and bridges were heavily damaged, making some areas, including Hernani, town isolated.

 

In Hernani town, two barangays were totally wiped out, while in Balangkayan town, 400 houses were totally damaged, the report said. 

 

The report added that residents in affected and isolated towns lacked food, water and clothes.

 

As of Saturday evening, at least 62 people were killed in Eastern Samar after Yolanda, said to be the most powerful storm in recorded history to make landfall, battered the Visayas on Friday, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s (NDRRMC).

As of Monday morning, the NDRRMC said the death toll from Yolanda climbed to 255, although it could not yet be determined how many were from Eastern Samar.

 

Yolanda made landfall over Guiuan in Eastern Samar at 4:40 a.m. Friday, state weather forecasters said.

 

Earlier, in an interview on GMA News TV's News To Go on Monday, PNP spokesperson Senior Superintendent Ruben Theodore Sindac said 883 police personnel, including 263 members of the Special Action Force, were deployed to disaster-stricken areas.

 

"Action taken ng Philippine National Police ay magpadala ng pwersa mula sa iba't-ibang rehiyon na hindi naapektuhan ng typhoon," he said. "We are still performing as much as we could. Pipilitin naming makaabot sa mga hindi maabot na lugar." — with Amanda Fernandez/RSJ, GMA News
