6 dead in Camarines Sur bus collision


(Updated 1:44 p.m.) Six people were killed after a Manila-bound bus carrying some residents of Typhoon Yolanda-ravaged Tacloban City collided with a Bicol-bound passenger bus in Del Gallego town in Camarines Sur before dawn Saturday.

The accident occurred at 4 a.m. at a part of the Quirino Highway at Barangay Comadaycaday in Del Gallego, radio dzBB's Peewee Bacuño reported.

There were 30 passengers injured with 8 in critical condition including the driver and conductor of the Raymond Transport bus according to a separate TV report by Bacuño in GMA's Balitanghali program.

The injured and were brought to nearby hospitals for treatment. Some suffered fractures, the report said.

Also, traffic in the area was snarled by the accident, where a portion of the highway to be slippery due to oil from the buses.

An initial investigation showed the accident involved a Raymond Transport bus heading for Bicol from Metro Manila, and a tour bus from Tacloban City, one of the areas hit hardest by Super Typhoon Yolanda last week.

Those aboard the second bus were Tacloban residents wanting to head for Metro Manila.

Three were killed on the spot while four were pinned under the wreckage, the report said.

It added that representatives from the Raymond Transportation immediately came and gave financial aid to all the injured.

It was not immediately clear if the fatalities included the Tacloban residents bound for Manila.

Police are verifying claims by the driver of the Manila-bound bus that he tried to avoid hitting another bus and slammed into the Bicol-bound Raymond bus. — with a report from Andrei Medina /LBG, GMA News
