Japan sends 3rd disaster relief medical team to Yolanda-hit areas


A new team of medical relief workers from Japan has been dispatched to areas hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), the Japanese Embassy in Manila said.
 
The Embassy said the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Medical Team, the third sent by the Japanese government so far, is to arrive in the Philippines Friday.
 
It will take over from the second JDR Medical Team, which is based in Tacloban City, it added.
 
The third team will engage in "medical activities in the disaster affected areas including the suburbs of Tacloban City."
 
According to the embassy, the first and second medical teams had treated 1,519 patients from Nov. 15 to 26.
 
Japan also sent a Self-Defense Force unit, and provided $53.1 million in aid so far, including:
 
- Emergency Grant Aid, $30 million
- Emergency Relief Goods, $600,000
- Assistance through Japanese NGOs: $1.5 
- Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) of Asian Development Bank (ADB): $20 million
- ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR): $500,000
- Assistance through ILO for job creation and skills training: $500,000
 
Yolanda tore through Visayas and Southern Luzon last Nov. 8, leaving behind more than 5,500 dead in its wake.  — ELR, GMA News
