NDRRMC: Yolanda death toll now 5,598, damage up to P27.8B


Three weeks after super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) devastated the Visayas and Southern Luzon, the number of fatalities in its wake continued to climb, reaching 5,598 as of 6 a.m. Friday.
 
In its 6 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the damage caused by Yolanda went up as well, reaching P27.839 billion.
 
Aside from the 5,598 fatalities, the NDRRMC also recorded 26,136 injured and 1,759 still missing.
 
Yolanda also affected 2,325,638 families or 10,956,460 people in 11,996 villages in 44 provinces.
 
Of these, 48,239 families or 219,158 people are still staying in 1,095 evacuation centers.
 
The NDRRMC said Yolanda destroyed 580,481 houses and damaged 587,625 others.
 
Damage
 
Damage caused by Yolanda was estimated at P27,839,205,377.09, including P15,556,130,890 in infrastructure and P12,283,074,487.09 in agriculture.
 
The NDRRMC noted increases in damage to roads and bridges at P12,705,017,240 and to crops (P5.948 billion), livestock (P2.213 billion), fisheries (P2.259 billion), and other agricultural infrastructure (P1.65 billion).
 
Cost of assistance was estimated at P630,982,863.62.
 
Yolanda tore through Visayas and Southern Luzon on Nov. 8. Its destruction prompted the international community to respond with aid to those affected. —KG, GMA News
