Better preparation could have saved BSU students, victim's dad says

The father of Bulacan State University (BSU) student Sean Rodney Alejo, one of the fatalities in the tragic field trip to Madlum River said they could have survived the accident had the school prepared for the trip better.

“Wala silang life vest, wala silang safety gear... Unang una, wag kayo magpapa-field trip kung 'di niyo kayang pigilan 'yung mga kasama ninyo [na bata],” Rodolfo Alejo said in a report on "24 Oras" aired Saturday.

The younger Alejo's remains were buried last Friday. The field trip for the school's Tourism students ended in a tragic accident when a flash flood swept away and claimed the lives of six other students last Tuesday.

Droves of people — including some survivors of the incident — wearing black came in to bid Alejo farewell.

According to survivor Danielle Cunanan, she only saw two student tour guides with them during the field trip.

At least 40 students joined the trip after they were told they could be exempted from their final exams for going.

Meanwhile, BSU's fact-finding team is investigating whether the travel agency they contracted may have erred in organizing the field trip. — Andrei Medina/JDS, GMA News
