NDRRMC: Pangasinan town in state of calamity due to Luis, revised death toll up to 4

A town in Pangasinan was placed in a state of calamity due to the effects of Typhoon Luis (Kalmaegi), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Wednesday.

In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC also said the revised death toll from Typhoon Luis rose to four as of early Wednesday, with a resident of Nueva Vizcaya as the latest fatality.

The NDRRMC said Calasiao town in Pangasinan issued Resolution 99 dated September 16, declaring a state of calamity.

Also, the NDRRMC identified the latest fatality as Tomas Prino Barol, 31, who was buried alive after mud and rocks fell on the tent where he slept.

Barol was killed at 11:45 p.m. on September 14, the NDRRMC said.

Earlier, the NDRRMC revised its list of fatalities, crossing out three people who died after a roll-on roll-off vessel sank off Southern Leyte last Saturday.

As of Wednesday morning, the NDRRMC said Luis affected 85,336 families or 371,394 people, who were brought to 51 evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also said at least 21 roads and five bridges are still not passable in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol and Cordillera.

Flooding has persisted in parts of Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Mimaropa.

Damage

Damage to property was estimated at P434,563,096.39, including P650,000 in infrastructure and P433,913,096.39 in agriculture.

At least 211 houses were destroyed while 607 were damaged.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said landslides are now functional in Cagayan Valley.

While the NDRRMC removed the fatalities from last Saturday's sinking of the RORO vessel "Maharlika 2" from its official list of fatalities, its 6 a.m. update still listed them in its detailed list of casualties. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
