5 NPA rebels killed in ComVal clash with military

Five communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels were killed Friday in an encounter with government troops in Compostela Valley, an Army official said.

1Lt. Vergel Lacambra, spokesman for the 10th Infantry Division, said the clash occurred at about 2 p.m. at Sitio Upper Balantang in Barangay  Cabuyuan in Mabini town when patrolling soldiers spotted an undetermined number of NPA rebels.

“After a fierce ten-minute gunfight, the rebels fled leaving behind their five dead comrades,” Lacambra said, adding five high-powered firearms were also recovered from the site of the encounter.

No casualty was reported on the government side.

Lacambra said personnel from the Philippine National Police-Scene of the Crime Operatives (PNP-SOCO) proceeded at the encounter site for documentation and identification of the bodies.

“This is part of our intensified efforts to curve the recent series of banditry attacks perpetrated by NPA rebels,” said 10ID commander Maj. Gen. Eduardo Año.

Over the weekend, the rebels abducted two soldiers securing a banana plantation in New Corella, Davao del Norte.

The rebels also attacked government troops securing an ongoing road construction project in San Fernando, Bukidnon.  —KBK, GMA News
