Weaker Seniang deadlier than Super Typhoon Ruby, kills 53

(Updated 2:45 p.m.) The death toll from Tropical Storm Seniang (Jangmi) jumped to 53 as of Wednesday noon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has said.

Seniang, which had winds of 65 kph near the center with gusts of 80 kph, officially caused more deaths than Typhoon Ruby that hit Eastern Visayas and nearby provinces in early December.

Ruby, which was even compared to Super Typhoon Yolanda, had winds of more than 200 kph and gustiness of more than 260 kph.

The NDRRMC's official death toll in Ruby's aftermath stood at 19 as of Dec. 4.

Seniang's rains, however, did most of the damage when it hit as it caused floods and landslides.

Residents in some parts of the Visayas and Mindanao were forced to evacuate their homes as flood waters rose above their heads.

NDRRMC executive director Alexander Pama said most of the fatalities were killed by the rain-induced landslide in Catbalogan City, radio station dzBB's Glen Juego reported

Pama added Seniang had affected 52,000 families and left 26 injured and eight still missing.

In its early morning bulletin Wednesday, damage to agriculture was estimated at P3,681,800 including P2,783,300 in Agusan del Sur and P898,500 in Misamis Oriental.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines on Wednesday afternoon said at least 17 transmission lines in Visayas and Mindanao were affected by Tropical Storm Seniang.

Weakened

According to PAGASA, Tropical Cyclone Seniang weakened into a tropical depression early Wednesday morning—but not before leaving dozens dead and thousands more stranded.

In its 10 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Storm Signal No. 1 is up over Palawan.

However, it said Palawan may have moderate to heavy rain with occasional gusty winds, with residents in low-lying and mountainous areas alerted against flash floods and landslides. — Joel Locsin/VC/NB/KG, GMA News
