More than 4,000 arrested for smoking in Davao in 2014 - report

Davao City authorities arrested 4,396 people in 2014 for violating an ordinance against smoking outdoors, news site based in the city reported over the weekend.

More people were arrested in 2014 and authorities said more establishments had violated the anti-smoking ordinance, Davao Today reported.

“We used to have just 3,000 plus, usually 3,500. It increased (by) around 800,” it quoted Davao City's Anti-Smoking Task Force co-chairperson Dr. Domilyn Villarreiz as saying.

Fines collected from violators from June 2013 to November 2014 amounted to P2,370,796. “We collected P1.4 million last year alone,” she said.

But she added there are violators among restaurants and night spots, citing the case of a night spot that let people smoke in an outdoor space.

The city's anti-smoking ordinance does not allow smoking in outdoor areas near entrances and exits.

Villarreiz said the campaign should be intensified this year. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
