Some 4,000 families were affected in a fire that hit a residential area in Pagadian City on Monday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

In an update posted on its website early Tuesday, the NDRRMC said the fire broke out in Barangay Santiago at noon, and spread to nearby houses in Barangays San Pedro and Kawit.

The NDRRMC said the 4,000 affected families were forced to evacuate to the parking area of a nearby mall.

Some 4,000 houses made of semi-concrete and light materials were damaged due to the fire, it added.

Local Philippine Red Cross Zamboanga del Sur members provided medical aid to the injured victims. The NDRRMC did not say how many were injured. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
