1 explosion-type event, 1 rockfall in last 24 hours at Bulusan —PHIVOLCS

At least one "explosion-type" event and one rockfall were recorded in the last 24 hours at Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Friday.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS said it recorded "one explosion-type and one rockfall event during the past 24 hours" at Bulusan.

"The small, explosion-type event lasted for about two minutes based on seismic record but was not observed visually due to thick clouds covering the summit," it said.

PHIVOLCS said residents in Barangay Monbon in Irosin town, west-southwest of Bulusan, reportedly heard a rumbling sound between 5 and 7 a.m. Thursday.

Moderate emissions of white steam plumes, 250 meters high, were observed drifting southwest.

PHIVOLCS maintained Alert Level 1 (abnormal) is in effect over Bulusan, indicating hydrothermal processes are underway beneath the volcano that may lead to more steam-driven eruptions.

It also reminded local government units and the public against venturing into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone "due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions."

"Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft," it added.

Also, it reminded people living within valleys and along river/stream channels to be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in case of heavy and prolonged rainfall. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
