Siopao downs 16 pupils in North Cotabato

KIDAPAWAN CITY — Sixteen Grade V pupils were rushed to a hospital when they complained of stomach ache after consuming siopao during recess on Thursday.

In a local radio interview, Joel Calambro Sr, principal of Dualing Elementary School in Barangay Dualing, Aleosan, North Cotabato, said that one hour after the recess, the students started complaining of stomach ache and nausea.

Teachers rushed the affected pupils to nearby Aleosan Distict Hospital, Calambro said.

"Allegedly they ate siopao they bought from our school canteen," he added.

He said the siopao was delivered to their school canteen by a supplier. "Actually, 99 pieces were delivered but we only got 32. Perhaps some of it was already contaminated that caused our pupils to suffer stomach ache."

Calambro assured the parents of the victims that an investigation will be conducted on the incident, which he said was the first time in their school.

Moreover, he said that of the 16 pupils only eight are still recuperating in the hospital, and they would soon be discharged. — Williamor Magbanua/LBG, GMA News
