Over 300 hospitalized after eating durian, mangosteen candies in Surigao del Sur

(Updated 8:37 p.m.) Over 300 students were hospitalized after eating durian and mangosteen candies in Surigao del Sur.

P/Insp. Paul Paden, operations officer of Tandag City Police, said the victims were the municipalities of Marihatag, Madrid, Tago, Cagwait and the city of Tandag.

In Tandag alone, 286 were reported hospitalized, according to Paden, adding some of the victims came from Tago and Cagwait municipalities.

Sixteen students were reported hospitalized in Marihatag while 31 were reported in Madrid, Paden said.

In Cagwait, Dr Sherwin Mantilla, the municipal health officer, said the affected students came from six schools.

A News TV Live report quoted Surigao del Sur Governor Johnny Pimentel as saying that the students were rushed to hospitals after they experienced stomachache, vomiting, and dizziness.

Seven out-of-school youths—five from Cagwait and two from Tandag City—who allegedly sold the candies were already arrested by the Philippine National Police.

"12 daw silang magkakasama  -- yung apat nakaalis na," Paden said.

The Office of Civil Defense in CARAGA Region told GMA News Online that the candies were already expired.

Paden said they received information the candies came from Davao City.

The incident occurred on the same day 44 students were hospitalized also from eating durian candies in Kidapawan City. —Trisha Macas/KBK, GMA News
