Zamboanga Sibugay town mayor killed on first day of COC filing


(Updated 8:25 p.m.) A mayor in Zamboanga Sibugay was killed in an ambush on the first day of the filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2016 elections, according to the chief of police in Tungawan town.

In a report on radio station dzBB, Tungawan police chief Senior Inspector Ricardo Pacana said Tungawan Mayor Randy Climaco was killed in the attack while Vice Mayor Abison Abduraok, a driver and two escorts were hurt.

Climaco on Monday morning filed his certificate of candidacy to run for vice mayor next year.

Pacana said Climaco was killed on the spot while those hurt have been brought to the hospital.

Police have yet to identify the attackers.

Climaco's uncle Arsenio Climaco was also killed in an ambush almost two years ago on November 14, 2013.

Antipolo shooting

Also on Monday in Antipolo, a member of the Liberal Party was shot and wounded as he was about to attend a meeting of the ruling party early morning.

Mac Semilla, a candidate for councilor, suffered gunshot wounds on the ear and on his side.

He was scheduled to file his COC on Monday.

Two men who were seen at the hospital where Semilla was taken were invited for questioning by the Antipolo police investigators.

Investigators are still looking into whether the shooting had anything to do with politics. —NB/JST, GMA News
