3 killed as MNLF-MILF clash on New Year's Eve


KIDAPAWAN CITY - Some three Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) gunmen were killed in a fire fight with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters in Matalam, Cotabato on New Years’ Eve, a local police official said.

According to Matalam police chief Senior Inspector Sunny Leoncito,  two groups opened fire on one another when they accidentally crossed paths in Barangay Kidama.

Leoncito identified the fatalities as Dadrodin Ingkig ,27; Taya Akmad, 60; and a certain Marcial, 35.

The police chief also confirmed that at least six houses were set fire to and 152 families were evacuated during the gunfight.

Also, some 50 families from the nearby village of Marbel also took shelter at evacuation sites.

The displaced families stayed at the evacuation centers, where they were provided with food packs, through New Year.

Meanwhile, Matalam Mayor Oscar Valdevieso, officials from the security services, and other LGU officials tried to intervene and attempted to start a dialogue between the warring groups. — DVM, GMA News
