Military condemns NPA atrocities in Surigao del Norte

A military official reported that the New People's Army detonated an Improvised Explosive Device in Malimono town in Surigao del Norte on Monday morning, the Philippine Information Agency Region 13 reported.

The military engaged NPA members in a gun fight in Barangay Tinago in Malimono, Surigao del Norte in which one soldier was injured and damage to properties were reported.

It was also reported that residents have complained on the continuous harassment and extortion activities of the rebels.

Col. Rico Amaro, commander of the Philippine Army's 30th Infantry Battalion, said, "This is another violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect to Human Rights & Int'l Humanitarian Law which was the only document duly signed by the GPH (Government of the Philippines) and NDF (National Democratic Front) at Hague, Netherlands."

"We will not allow anymore the NPA to conduct extortion activity, harassment & other forms of atrocities not only in Malimono but in the whole province of Surigao del Norte," Amaro added.
