Suspected NPA guerrillas kill cop, seize 3 others in Quirino province

Suspected communist rebels killed a policeman and abducted three others, including a town police chief in Quirino province.

Citing police and military sources GMA News stringer Villamor Visaya Jr reported Sunday that some 50 suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members stormed the Maddela town police station at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A certain PO2 Cardena, intelligence officer of the town’s police, was killed in the incident.

The attackers, supposedly belonging to the NPA's Southern Front of the Kilusang Larangang Gerilya, barged into the police station and disarmed the officers on duty.

Cardena was killed in the 20-minute gunfight. The rebels took the town’s police chief, Insp. Jhun-Jhun Balisi and his on-duty police officers, SPO4 Antonio Sibiran and a certain PO2 Albano.

Sibiran and Albano were found unharmed hours later.

The attackers took away guns, laptops, and other items in the station, then took an elf truck and two cars as they fled.

Along their escape route, the rebels torched a dump truck owned by a construction company contracted for an ongoing road project in the town, the report said.

The two cars were later found abandoned in Barangay San Pedro, but the rebels took the truck to the hillsides of Barangay Manglad.

Quirino has been placed on red alert, with police checkpoints set up all over the province, as well as in the neighboring provinces of Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya.

In Isabela, police intercepted a van with five “suspicious looking” passengers in Jones, a town near Maddela, at 2 a.m. Sunday. They were taken to the police station for questioning.
