'Yantok' cops spend 2nd night in Marawi guarding houses, feeding animals

The two Mandaluyong City policemen caught on video assaulting curfew violators spent their second night in Marawi City guarding abandoned houses from looters and feeding animals, GMA News' Chino Gaston reported on 24 Oras on Friday.

Instead of a yantok, the weapon he used to beat up the victims, PO1 Jose Tandog was now armed with an M60 machinegun while his colleague, PO1 Chito Enriquez, was armed with an M4 rifle, the report said.

Together with soldiers from the Philippine Army, Tandog and Enriquez spent their second night in Marawi City roaming the streets and guarding the houses from possible looters, it added.

"Oo, may mga sibilyan talagang pumapasok, may mga nahuli na 'yung ibang tropa doon," said Enriquez.

The two vowed to perform their duty well to prove that they deserve to be in Marawi City after Maranao leaders, as well as Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, said the two might just cause more problems in the conflict-stricken city.

"Exciting naman po at siyempre nakakatulong kami rito sa Marawi," said Tandog.

Aside from guarding houses against looters, Tandog and Enriquez were also part of the group that distributed animal food from donors to the cats and dogs abandoned by their owners following the attack of the pro-ISIS Maute group on the city.

Clashes in Marawi City continue to this day, more than a month after members of the Maute group stormed the area, seizing civilians and setting fire to establishments. Close to 200 people have already been killed, most of them terrorists.

The attack prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to put the entire Mindanao under martial law. —KBK, GMA News
