Rise in Japanese encephalitis cases recorded in Pampanga; 4 people dead


Cases of Japanese encephalitis continue to rise in Pampanga.

In a 24 Oras report, data from the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine in the province showed that there are already 32 confirmed cases of Japanese encephalitis.

A total of 259 suspected cases have been recorded in the province since July.

The report added that four people have died in the province, including a five-year-old girl.

"Matagal na po tayong may mga kaso ng Japanese encephalitis. There's a clinical practice guideline sa all our hospitals know how to address cases," said Health Secretary Dr. Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial.

The report said that there is already a shortage in vaccine supplies for the illness due to the increasing number of cases.

Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito-borne viral infection which is common in agricultural areas.

Its symptoms include high fever, neck pain and changes in one's behavior. —Anna Felicia Bajo/ALG, GMA News
