2 Swedes, Pinoy injured in firefight between cops, insurgents in Negros


Two Swedes and their Filipino driver were wounded when they were caught in a firefight between insurgents and police officers in Negros Occidental Tuesday afternoon.

The Swedes were identified as Karl Christer Arvidsson, who was shot in his left wrist; and Juliana Palmero, who was shot in the left shoulder. Their driver, Jason Tumayao, was shot in the face, stomach, and thigh.

The three were brought to Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan City and eventually to VAMC Sanitarium in Bacolod City.

According to the initial police report, five members of the Cauayan Municipal Police in a police patrol car were ambushed by an undetermined number of fully armed men in the vicinity of Sitio Sohoton, Barangay Caliling, Cauayan at around 1:06 p.m.

A 15-minute firefight ensued.

The civilians were hit when their car crossed into the ambush area.

The armed men then withdrew towards the direction of Sitio Matognao in Barangay Linaon.

Region 6 spokesperson Superintendent Gilbert Gorero said there were no casualties among the police. Bystanders who witnessed the withdrawal of the armed group said that at least one of them seemed wounded. — BM, GMA News
