6 inmates shoot guard, escape Laguna Provincial Jail

Six inmates jailed for heavy crimes escaped from the Laguna Provincial Jail on Friday after overpowering the jail guards and shooting the one on duty.

Rommel Palacol of the Laguna Action Center said that the six inmates used sharp materials and a cal.-38 hand gun to escape from the facility.

According to a report on News TV Live, the prisoners launched their jailbreak at 11 a.m.—during visiting hours so they were out of their cells.

"Dito po ito sa Laguna Provincial Jail, nagkaroon po ng biglaang pagpuga po ng anim na preso. Na-overpower po 'yung ating mga jail guard," he said in an interview on GMA's Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday.

"Naunahan po ng tutok ng baril po at saka ng mga matatalas na bagay kaya nakatakas po 'yung ating anim na preso at nagkaroon po ng pagkakasugat po o ng malalang kalagayan 'yung isang jail [guard] ho natin na nabaril po," he added.

Palacol identified the wounded jail guard as Norberto Malabanan, who was shot in the face. The escapees also took an M-16 rifle from him.

"Siya po ay tinamaan ng bala sa parteng mukha. Ito po ay hindi tumagos. Yoong bala nananatili sa pagitan ng cheek bone niya, hindi naman tumagos sa utak, pero nanatiling nasa malubhang kalagayan po siya ngayon," he said.

Malabanan is currently confined at the Laguna Medical Center where he will be treated until his situation gets stable so he can be transferred to another hospital for surgery.

Palacol identified the escapees and their respective cases as:

  • Randell Valle Y Bucal from Bulihan, Laguna (murder)
  • Rio Mahilon Y Amihan from Caloocan (illegal possession of firearms)
  • Reyman Reymundo Y Caparaas from Binan, Laguna (murder)
  • Teddy Bucal Y Sarte from Mabitac, Laguna (murder)
  • Rommel Macaraig Y Esmer from San Pablo, Laguna (carnapping)
  • Borgias Dizon Y Zaldy from Biñan, Laguna (possession of illegal drugs0

Upon escaping from the jail, the fugitives commandeered a Toyota Revo got away. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Los Baños.

Authorities are now on a manhunt in cooperation with the local government units of nearby provinces. —LBG/BM, GMA News
