Mayon continues to spew lava, ash cloud; more residents evacuate

Mayon volcano continued to spew lava and emit thick ash clouds on Tuesday morning.

As of 9:12 a.m., a live video on GMA News' Facebook page shows thick cloud of grayish ash coming out from the volcano.

In a report on Unang Balita by Saleema Refran, the continuous spewing of lava from the crater of the volcano could be seen clearly around 2 a.m.

Lava fountaining was also observed with loud grumbling sounds at 1:32 a.m. It also spewed bright brimstone.

The report also said that the volcano's entire crater since Monday night seemed to be on fire due to the continuous lava flow.

On Monday evening, residents living within the eight-kilometer extended danger zone were evacuated to the Bagumbayan Central School in Legazpi, Albay.

Following the volcano's eruptions on Monday, which prompted the raising of Alert Level 4 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara suspended classes in all levels in the province and told residents to remain inside their homes.

The provincial government said at least 35,895 people have been displaced by the volcano's intense activity.

The provincial council has placed the province under a state of calamity.

Meanwhile, the governor is asking more help from the national government. He said they are running out of funds, face masks and supplies for the residents affected by the volcano's activity. — BAP/ALG, GMA News
