Lumad leader killed by NPA in Surigao del Norte — military


A lumad leader was shot dead in front of his family by suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) on Friday, the military reported.

Dakula Guillermo Tiambong, 58, a farmer and Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of the Mamanwa Tribe in Alegria, Surigao del Norte was shot while attending to his farm in Barangay Camp Edward in Alegria, Surigao del Norte.

Girlie, the victim's daughter said her father has received death threats from NPA members for being an active advocate of peace and development.

Datu Tiambong represented his tribe during the Indigenous People's Summit held last month in Davao where President Rodrigo Duterte.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Dakula Guillermo Tiambong whose daughter is an active youth leader," said Lt. Col. Allen Raymund Tomas, Commanding Officer of 30IB.

In a separate statement, 30IB Commander Brig. Gen. Franco Nemesio M. Gacal said, "We condemn the terrorist CPP-NPA for the unlawful act of murder to helpless IPs. This is again a clear violation of the Human Rights. With their crime committed, full force of the law will be utilized to bring justice to the victim." — Merlyn Manos/BAP, GMA News
